*******************************

Yesterday, I went to the Pasteur Institute to write up the paper that have waited for long time to come out. It is a scientific paper on a molecule that controls the action of mast cell, one of the key players in the development of allergy. In fact, I should have done much earlier, ideally before coming here, or hopefully by the end of last year. But I simply could not do it. One of the reasons is obviously that I could not concentrate my energy and attention to science because the study of the new field of philosophy overwhelmed me. Now that I am free from these obligations, I finally get some psychological space for this work.

Having happily started the long-awaiting paper, I felt like seeing a movie. At the theater, the film of M. Night Shyamalan ("Phénomènes", the original title: "The Happening") was about to start and I decided to see it. One of the reasons is that I liked his earlier "The Sixth Sense". Although the next one "Unbreakable" did not impress me at all, I wanted see the development of his film-making since then.

This movie deals with some interesting problems: for example, what science can and cannot do, the interaction between man and nature, and of course love. The plot itself is intriguing and the tempo is also pleasant. But something important is missing. This may be related to my perception that everything is superficial or shallow. Unfortunately I was not satisfied completely by this movie, or more precisely I am not any more for this type of film that I have enjoyed before. I don't know why. That is because my sensitivity has changed since I came here in Paris last September? Or simply because of the process of aging that occurs anywhere you are? In any case, I had an impression that unless Shyamalan drastically change or modifies his present style of film-making, it will be difficult to produce a movie that surpasses the level of "The Sixth Senses".

  1. Bonjour,
